The elections are approaching and the political arena is heating up. I am seeing more and more news items of an election variety and so want to put in my own 2c worth.

It is quite trendy and perhaps even politically correct to cast doubts on all parties in the upcoming election and on the very voting system itself. Our trust in officials is being undermined by the news of corruptible voting machines as well as the poor ethical level of those who represent the citizens of the USA in the 2 houses. How warranted is this?

My understanding is that the elected officials (and the professional ones too) are sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United states, which is defined by the Declaration of Independence. It seems to me that the Declaration lays out the basic terms by which the USA wants to live and the Constitution puts this in writing as a list of rights and priviledges whereas the Declaration was more into the reasons why the colonies were breaking away rather than what rights the person would have in their day to day existence.

It is clear that tyranny is not to be tolerated. It is clear that the citizen should not have to pay a tax which is then spent arbitrarily without him having a say. One reason for the breakaway was the British taxes levied on American citizens did not benefit the man in New York or Boston, but rather, the man in London!

OK! So what is the current scene in the “Land of the free”?

Where do your taxes go? You would expect to have roads kept in good shape, hospitals to be adequately staffed, schools to be effective in teaching your kids.

So how come I have pot-holes in my road when I go to work? Why is there a 7 hour long wait when I go to Olive View Hospital as a “walk in” patient, and how come I am appalled at the education level of the kids of today? The roads used to be better than this! Hospitals had a great reputation! I was able to read and write quite adequately when I came out of school.

I hear there is a Government “black budget” which is worth trillions. Is there any citizen who is allowed to look into this and find out what it is about?

Was the President of the United States not caught out recently? Was he blatantly not following the Constitution of the United States when he allowed wire-tapping of people in the USA? Surely he broke his oath to uphold the Constitution? He has gotten away with it! Where are the lawyers who should have stripped him of his office by carrying out an impeachment?

There is a March happening in the streets of the cities of the USA. It is October 5th which is a Thursday and the one in LA starts at 5pm at the Downtown federal building. For your city, check out the site WorldCantWait.org

I will be bringing up more insights into the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States in future posts.
